The Movement is the Message:  A 2-Day Dance Film Workshop

Most dance films try to film dance made for the stage.  This fails, since stage dance flows from only one angle, while film cuts life into shots from different angles.  To make real dance film, choreographers must understand film composition and directors must understand the textures and rhythms of dance.  It requires choreographing shot-by-shot, with “sticky ends”, non-stage locations, camera angles, camera movement, and montage.

This workshop is ideal for filmmakers, choreographers, and dancers who want to make dance film, and for artists who want to exercise their visual imaginations.

Daniel Conrad‘s ten dance films have screened at scores of international festivals, garnering a wealth of prizes; have been broadcast by PBS, CBC, ZDF (Germany), TVE (Spain), ARTV, Ovation and Bravo; were featured at the Portland Art Museum series Icons, Rebels and Visionaries, and were purchased by the National Gallery of Art, Wash, D.C.
