Cineworks Artist in Residence: Alex MacKenzie

January 5, 2012 § Leave a comment

MacKenzie is an experimental film artist working primarily with analogue equipment and hand-processed imagery. He creates works of expanded cinema, light projection installation, and projector performance.  His work has screened at the Rotterdam International Film Festival, the EXiS Experimental Film Festival in Seoul, Lightcone in Paris, Kino Arsenal in Berlin and others.  MacKenzie was the founder and curator of the Edison Electric Gallery of Moving Images, the Blinding Light!! Cinema and the Vancouver Underground Film Festival.  While in residence, he will be completing two film works that explore both the urban waterfront  and the environs adjacent to Cineworks’ Annex space in Gastown.  MacKenzie will be actively investigating and manipulating handmade emulsions throughout the filmmaking process and will be presenting completed works at the Annex in Winter 2012.  In addition, he will be conducting a workshop on expanded cinema practices through Cineworks in May.  He is available for public studio visits by appointment through Programs Manager and Curator Jennifer Cane.

The LAIR (Local Artist in Residence) program is supported by Cineworks Independent Filmmakers Society and the City of Vancouver Artistic Residencies Program. For further details on the LAIR residency, please visit www.cineworks.ca.  For more information on Alex MacKenzie visit www.alexmackenzie.ca

In this 3-part workshop, participants will take part in every stage of Super-8 film, including shooting, developing, and screening.  Day 1 focuses on how to use a common thrift-store Super8 camera, including camera speeds, exposures, single-framing (animation), in-camera editing, and an intro to B/W film, with hands-on collaborative film shooting.  Day 2 focuses on processing your own B/W Super-8 movie film, with hands-on developing trials in our Annex darkroom.  Film will be transferred by Cineworks’ telecine transfer service, and on Day 3, participants will be able to focus on editing and exhibition possibilities, including an overview of Final Cut Pro capabilities, sound, and different methods of presenting the film.  This workshop is open to anyone who has ever been curious about Super-8, or those who have had a Super-8 camera kicking around and want to make films!

Instructor: For the past decade, film artist cj brabant has explored the regeneration and reformatting of the small-gauge film image. Working to make the familiar unfamiliar, brabant creates visual abstractions that yield the unseen and unfelt by means of mechanical and DIY processes that fracture, disassemble, and reassemble isolated moments. cj’s film work continues to screen internationally, most recently with his 35mm work “the fall”.
