July 16, 2012 § Leave a comment

An unspoken romance told through a series of square dance vignettes. An outsider enters a strange bar hoping to connect with people and instead finds a curious square dance troupe in the back. His patience is sorely tested when he pursues a mysterious square dancer in the troupe, only to be held in contempt for his romantic advances.

The second film in Jason Karman’s Mood for Love series which is told through the perspective of the Asian Diaspora, Square Dance Story (2011) ventures to capture the energy of finding love through a long forgotten medium: square dancing.

Cinework‘s Local Artist in Residence Program for 2012 is Cindy Mochizuki, an interdisciplinary artist working in installation, audio, performance, drawing, video, webworks and animation. Cindy’s works explore relationships between memory and history, and the construction of narratives that combine both the documentary and the imagined. For her residency, Cindy will be working on a new project, Shiro Yagi, which will take the only piece of sheet music from her maternal grandfather’s archives as a starting point into her new narrative. Shiro Yagi will have an open studio during SWARM 2012 and premiere in full in the Fall of 2012 at Cineworks. Stay tuned for more information.

We’re very excited to finally be able to announce the results of several months of negotiations with our underwriter to offer you a great new service.  Starting July 1, Cineworks will be able to offer members 10 day insurance packages at significant discounts to what filmmakers are currently finding in the market.  The policy will cover up to $125,000 worth of equipment (rented from us or anyone else) as well as $5 million in General Liability coverage (enough to cover shooting on Vancouver streets) for the miniscule cost of $250!  We will continue to enforce our policy of requiring coverage on all rental packages exceeding a replacement value of $5,000, but members renting smaller packages will be able to buy the coverage optionally as well.
